Journey Through Our Labyrinth
Friday, April 21, 2023 @ Great Lawn
Pause. Breathe. Consider. Explore. We invite you to find your center, spark your divine imagination, try the world's first search engine, and find wisdom on the winding path of the Reed Labyrinth.
Lars Howlett of Discover Labyrinths is a leading expert in the creation of custom labyrinths from exact replicas of classical and medieval designs to one-of-a-kind installations. Recognized as a passionate speaker and inspiring teacher on the practice of drawing, building, and walking labyrinths, he manages a vast image archive of diverse designs from past projects and journeys to sacred sites around the world. Howlett builds, walks, and photographs labyrinths as a practice in mindfulness. He is a Veriditas faculty member and Certified Advanced Labyrinth Facilitator, having trained with the leader of the labyrinth movement, Lauren Artress, at Grace and Chartres Cathedrals. For three years he was the apprentice to master builder Robert Ferre, learning the art of sacred geometry and his methods of creating proportional and precise Classical and Medieval patterns. In 2015, Howlett launched Discover Labyrinths LLC, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He inherited his mentor’s custom tools, labyrinth library, and workshop curriculum. In 2017, Howlett was named a master builder by contemporaries in his field.
Labyrinth creation will take place on April 17-18, and the labyrinth will open to the Reed community at noon on April 19 and be in place through Sunday, April 30.

Earth Day Speaker: Dr. Nalini Nadkarni
Friday, April 21, 2023 4:10pm to 5pm @ Performing Arts Building, PAB 320
Before the lecture, join the community in celebrating Earth Day (including tree climbing, opportunities to talk with Nalini, food and live music), at Reed's Earth Day Celebration.
Dr. Nalini Nadkarni is an early leader in developing canopy access techniques in her study of the plants, animals, and microbes that live in her study sites in Costa Rica and Washington State. Nadkarni discovered the deep interconnection of forest canopies and the rest of the forest ecosystem. She is also a passionate about science communication and has collaborated with a wide range of groups including preachers, policy-makers, and prisoners to bring science and nature to those who historically do not or cannot get access to them.
Tapestry Thinking: Weaving Nature and Knowledge for Conservation
Nalini Nadkarni tells the story of how her lifelong love of trees has led to new ways that people can understand and value forests. She describes the intricate ecological connections between canopy biota and the rainforests she has explored for four decades. She has created diverse pathways to engage urban youth, artists, rap singers, policy-makers, and faith-based groups. Since 2004, she has partnered with correctional institutions to bring science lectures, forest conservation projects, and nature imagery to incarcerated men, women, and youth. These efforts produced 140 scientific papers, children’s books, dance performances, art exhibits, poetry readings, and Mattel’s “TreeTop Barbie”. This interweaving of trees and people helps to create a stronger tapestry between nature and people.

Nature Based Mindfulness
Tuesday, April 25, 2023 3pm to 4pm @ Great Lawn
We are so glad you are interested in joining our nature based mindfulness experiences!
We will offer a variety of nature-based mindfulness experiences that can be modified depending on attendee preferences and accessibility needs. These practices will either be stationary or mindful walking experiences. If we decide to engage in a walking experience on the Reed campus, the pace will be slow and the focus will be on engaging your senses. The paths may be uneven/muddy. The focus of these practices will be to strengthen your relationship with the land and nature and to transition from “thinking” to “sensing” and from “doing” to “being” which will help facilitate nonjudgmental present-moment focus, connection, self-reflection, and centering.
See events.reed.edu for more information.

Peeling High-Dimensional Oranges -
A simplicial complex' is a space that one can obtain by gluing together triangles, tetrahedra, and higher dimensional analogues called simplices’. Simplicial complexes are important objects in topology, algebra, and combinatorics, as they can model a wide variety of spaces in a way that is accessible to calculation. One way to study a simplicial complex X is via a shelling': a way to order the top dimensional faces of X so that each piece intersects the previous facets in a nice way, similar to the way one would (un)peel an orange. The existence of a shelling has important consequences for its topological and algebraic properties of X. A well-known conjecture of Simon posits that certain complexes admit a greedy shelling, where one cannot get stuck in the process of lining up the facets. We will discuss ideas surrounding Simon's conjecture, including our proof of a special case which involves an application ofchordal graphs’. Much of this is joint work with Suho Oh and past REU students Michaela Coleman and Nathan Geist.
