Biology Seminar: Dr. Kristin Harper (12pm to 12:50pm @ Biology, Biology 19)

“Regulatory Strategies for Improving Access to Quality, Affordable Medicines Around the World” Access to safe, effective, and affordable medicines is critical for achieving universal health coverage, a major priority for the World Health Organization and many countries around the world. Currently, however, an estimated 2 billion people lack access to essential medicines. National and international regulatory authorities have an important role in improving access to lifesaving medicines. On the one hand, regulatory authorities are responsible for providing enough regulation that the medicines within a country or region are safe and effective. On the other hand, they cannot provide so much regulation that medicines become unaffordable or cannot reach the people who need them, especially during public health emergencies. Finding the right regulatory balance can be challenging, especially when resources are limited. This talk will explore some of the novel strategies that regulatory authorities around the world are using to improve access to quality, affordable medicines. Dr. Kristin Harper is a writer and editor that focuses on biomedical and public health. 11:50 am- Snacks & Socializing noon- Talk Begins

Denim Day (11am to 1pm @ GCC Patio)

Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April where folks wear denim to demonstrate support for survivors and challenge myths supporting sexual violence. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court in 1999, where a rape conviction was overturned after the judges ruled that the jeans worn by the victim were too tight to not have been removed by the victim–thereby implying consent. The day following the ruling, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Come by our table outside the GCC to write your messages of support!
