Senate Beat Is Playing Hide And Seek With Michael Lombardo

Action items: Volunteer for Renn Fayre! Buy from the Bookstore! SCAPP is surveying about quals. Most importantly, where is Michael Lombardo?

This being her first Senate Beat coverage, your humble Quest reporter observed the long table of senators facing the audience seated in rows of folding chairs and asked if the intimidating chair setup was normal. Senator and Appointments Committee Co-Chair Bella Moore ‘26 stated that it was usually like this, but one time they got the tables in a V-shaped configuration. There were murmurs of agreement when Moore reminisced on another fun time when the Student Union couches were provided in lieu of chairs.

Moore started the meeting briskly at 4:10 pm, reporting on behalf of Student Body Vice President Lucy Knight-King ‘26 and Student Body President Andee Gude ‘26, as neither of them were present.

Moore met with Title IX Coordinator Christy Martin regarding the freedom of the press and the Title IX Office’s relationship to the Quest with regard to "just, like, what we would even do" if someone made a concerning report to the Quest. Moore also talked about Fizz and "what's going on with that," stating that the College may pursue legal options such as a possible ban on using Reed's Wi-Fi to access Fizz.

Moore shared that the first draft of the updated Title IX policy was finalized, sent to the College’s lawyers, and sent back with corrections. An annotated version is now in the works so that it's more accessible for all community members.

Moore reported on Knight-King’s behalf that the Legislation Committee put forward a proposal for posting legislation and Senate is commenting on it tosend the proposal back before the end of the semester. Moorehad nothing to report from Gude.

Senator Catherine Hoyle ‘25 reported back from a big Accessibility Committee meeting with several subcommittees. On the topic of web page design, they will eventually submit a project request, but it's still in the works because the website content in question has not yet been created.

The Accessibility Committee realized that many other committees and resources around campus are also very helpful, so they want to link all resources to a central hub.The committee finalized the upcoming Google Form for reporting accessibility, drafted funding recommendation, identified community education opportunities, and is brainstorming next steps. Hoyle also let the audience know that Commons Committee would meet on April 22. Jewish Student Union (JSU) reached out for more resources for Jewish students in light of the Holocaust memorial day of Yom HaShoah on April 24. Community for Accessibility Resources and Disability Support (CARDS) had a meeting with the Library with Senators Alyssa Daggett ‘27, Moore and Gude regarding alternative lighting. They are currently looking into other options such as LED lights. CARDS also got a plaque for their mural in the GCC! CARDS is planning on printing an upcoming joint pamphlet with DAR. A Union Committee meeting happened, with nothing especially noteworthy happening; there will be more such meetings before the semester is out.

Senator Karter Stanton ‘26 had nothing to report other than a reminder that the Computer Policy and Planning Committee is meeting on April 25 and the Stop Hazing Committee meets April 29.

Assistant Treasurer Jules Flynn ‘27 met with Bookstore Director Jessica Valeske and faculty members regarding the Bookstore. Profit from the Bookstore goes to student body grants and scholarships, so please buy from the Bookstore, and please, please don't steal from them! Your purchase helps support fellow Reedies! Flynn exhorted Reedies to give the Bookstore more business because the Bookstore has not made a large profit for the past 10 years.

Flynn mentioned that paper will get more expensive because of tariffs, leading to books at the Bookstore being more expensive. Flynn recommended that students make any necessary book purchases at the beginning of the semester, as that's a cheaper time.Flynn had mentioned at the meeting that Reed could do a better job of keeping track of faculty books: Reed keeps a log of them and keeps copies of faculty books in the library and bookstore, but people don't know about it.Flynn is also currently trying to get cash back implemented during Renn Fayre and beer gardens, wherein Reedies could pay with a credit card and get cash back.

Head Treasurer Maya Gutierrez ‘27 reported that Renn Fayre requested and received $830.47, and the Reed Christian Fellowship requested $600.00 and was allocated $450.00. The motions to approve these requests passed unanimously with zero abstentions.

A reminder from Treasury that the last FinComm meeting is Tuesday, and May 2 is the last day for disbursements!

Renn Fayre is still in need of more volunteers, so please volunteer! Thesis karma if you do!

Vice Treasurer Yuri Garcia ‘27 missed the final Operations Committee meeting, but usually there is nothing new to report. Garcia reminded other senators to please have their P-card forms ready if they come to office hours.

Senator Eleanor Davis-Diver ‘26 had nothing to report.

Senator Milo Gardner-Stephens ‘25 was unable to make it to most of the Physical Plant Committee meeting; during the part of the meeting he was there for, they mostly just talked about requested lighting changes and how the changes would be "super complicated."Gardner-Stephens also mentioned that the Art Collections Committee is thinking of putting up a plaque in the Biology Building to name a room after someone.

Senator Andrew Happy ‘26 reported a lighter week. Happy, Moore, and Treasury met with Assistant Dean of Student Rights and Responsibilities Leo Cruz about how to support J-Board in future semesters regarding hiring schedules.

Senator Sima Fasihi ‘28 couldn't make it, but nevertheless had something to report that was read aloud from a shared Google Doc: the Student Committee on Academic Policy and Planning (SCAPP) tabled to get students’ opinions on quals, and there is now a survey out on updating quals! There are posters around with the survey and it's also in SB Info. Reedies, please fill it out if you want to see changes to your qual before you take it, or if you have taken down your qual already, pass down knowledge for other Reedies!

Fasihi will speak with Sports Center Director Michael Lombardo before the semester ends, though he's been a little hard to track down. "We literally just want to talk to him," was the sentiment expressed. In response to a question from the Quest on what Senate wanted to talk to Lombardo about, Moore vaguely clarified that "Lucy Knight-King had a productive conversation with him earlier in the semester and we would just like to speak to him again." "Sounds threatening," said another senator, whose identity could not be verified before the entire senate skedaddled.

Upon verifying that no one had anything else to report, Moore adjourned the meeting at 4:26pm. Please inform Senate if you have any information on the whereabouts of the apparently wanted personage of Michael Lombardo. The last Senate Public of the semester will be on Monday, April 28.
