Space Songs: Music for Renn Fayre

With Renn Fayre coming up, I’m offering some space-themed music to accompany you as you shop for the perfect outfit, work on your BARF project, or square away your assignments so you can get totally fuc… well, so you can take a mental trip off this planet!

David Bowie:

Life on Mars?

Moonage Daydream

Space Oddity

Starman

Lady Stardust

Star

Loving The Alien

The Prettiest Star

Ziggy Stardust

Hello Spaceboy

I would be remiss not to include many Bowie classics, given that his whole schtick is very space-centric. I would also be remiss not to acknowledge that many Reedies have likely taken their time with Bowie’s catalogue and, therefore, need no reminder of its existence; however, I cherry-picked these space-themed tracks to get you on track and thinking about Renn Fayre anyway.

The Smashing Pumpkins:

Rocket

Spaceboy

Luna

By Starlight

The Celestials

Alienation

Starrcraft

The Hidden Sun

Intergalactic

Space Age

If you can get over the Pavlovian instinct to cry while listening to Luna (or wait… that might be just me… nevermind), you can definitely put your spacesuit on to the tune of these Smashing Pumpkins tracks.

T. Rex:

Mambo Sun

Cosmic Dancer

Planet Queen

Root of Star

Spaceball Ricochet

Ballrooms of Mars

Venus Loon

Galaxy

Interstellar Soul

While my peers were busy “studying” in high school or whatever it was you all were doing to get into Reed, I was busy Marc Bolan posting on Tumblr (rest in peace). I have it on good (completely biased) authority that these are fantastic picks to accompany you through Renn Fayre. I can’t recommend their entire discography enough, but Electric Warrior is a great place to start if you get the chance.

Caroline Polacek:

Starburned and Sunkissed

Fly To You

Hit Me Where It Hurts

While I know an airplane isn’t quite a spaceship, I had to include “Hit Me Where It Hurts” anyway, seeing as it’s an incredible song. The track “Starburned and Sunkissed” was recorded for I Saw The TV Glow, so many Reedies will surely already be acquainted with the track. “Fly To You,” featuring Dido and Grimes, is another great song, and, for better or for worse, we can be sure that Grimes knows a thing or two about space. Well, at least in theory.

With some almost single artist selections out of the way, I’ll move onto different songs for different vibes this Renn Fayre, starting with some downbeat tracks for if things don’t go quite as planned, or if you’re looking to decompress at the end of the weekend.
