Tender: Sarah Gilbert and Pato Hebert ( @ Cooley Art Gallery)

The Cooley Gallery, Reed College, and Ditch Projects (Springfield) present the exhibition Tender, part of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s 2024 Time-Based Art Festival. Tender is the nature of this dyadic exhibition comprised of newly commissioned installations and stochastic works by longtime educators and colleagues Sarah Gilbert and Pato Hebert. For the artists, Tender is a healing endeavor. Both Gilbert and Hebert are in the process of negotiating their recovery from debilitating illness, injury, and the tragic loss of loved ones. Reading, listening, and touch are as essential to the exhibition as visual observation. Tender provides an opportunity for the artists to recount and transform their experiences—some caused or exacerbated by the pandemic—offering them with a desire for shared healing. Hannah Arendt described her experience of philosophical thought as “. . . a palpating tenderness toward the things of the world.” The wild beauty of the installation springs from the artists’ emotional attunement, and their embrace of the natural world within their work. Gilbert and Hebert ritualize and play with the vulnerability that has reshaped their lives.

Biology Seminar: Dr. Cagney Coomer (12pm to 12:50pm @ Biology, Biology 19)

"Tango: Antero and retro-grade transsynaptic approaches to mapping the vertebrate CNS" Deciphering the connectome, the ensemble of synaptic connections that underlie brain function, is a central goal of neuroscience research. Here, we report in vivo mapping of connections between presynaptic and postsynaptic partners in zebrafish, by adapting the trans- and retro-Tango genetic approaches that were first developed for antero- and retrograde transsynaptic tracing in Drosophila. Dr. Cagney Coomer's research seeks a greater understanding of brain function  by mapping of neural circuit connectivity throughout the nervous system, using adapted, trans-Tango, a powerful genetic approach for anterograde circuit tracing and manipulation in Drosophila to a zebrafish nervous systems.

CS Colloquium: Joseph Skudlarek (3:40pm to 4:30pm @ Eliot 314)

A Novel Fast 2D Octolinear Minimum Spanning Tree Solution - Digital hardware design requires determining a physical layout of circuits which matches their logical specifications. This work presents a novel fast scanline algorithm, deployed in production to show logically but not yet physically connected circuit elements. We present a proof based on non-Euclidean geometry that the generated connections are correct. In practice, this work dramatically improves the runtime of certain circuit design tools, from several hours down to a few seconds. Bio: Joseph P. Skudlarek is a retired high tech industrial software professional, having worked primarily as a developer on operating systems and computer-aided design tools. He has held a number of positions in industry including both startups and established companies, most recently at Siemens Digital Industries Software.

Biology Seminar: Dr. Rikke Reese Næsborg (12pm to 12:50pm @ Biology, Biology 19)

"What’s growing on up there? And why should we care?" Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) supports rich communities of epiphytes growing high above the forest floor. Across their entire range—from the Oregon border to the Big Sur coast—we explored epiphytes on large and old redwood trees. On just 33 trees, we found several rare lichen species and three that were entirely new to science. Lichens are important ecosystem components, but they are extremely underrepresented in conservation, especially compared to animals and plants. We will take a tour through the old-growth redwood forest canopy and discuss why so many different lichen species find their home in this ecosystem. We will also touch on why lichens, despite their important role in nature, are rarely considered for conservation. Dr. Rikke Reese Næsborg is interested in investigating lichen community composition and ecology in order to identify why different lichen species are distributed differently across landscapes.
