SENATE BEAT Is It Is Won’t Reopen

In the last meeting this semester covered by the Quest and the second-to-last Senate Public, many Senators announced the seeds of plans that would be underway over the summer, or begin at the start of next year.

Student Body President Andee Gude opened the meeting by announcing that the mentorship form sent out in SB Info by the Center for Life Beyond Reed (CLBR) had received a huge response, and that work to sift through the responses and assign a limited pool of mentors would be slow.

They also announced work they were doing with Vice President and Dean for Institutional Diversity Phyllis Esposito to institutionalize and standardize bias training. Senator Meera Balan’s reports (read by President Gude on account of her absence) included plans to contact Community Safety Director Gary Granger to reopen discussions about lighting more parts of campus.

Head Treasurer Anahi Sanchez Marcial announced that, at the time of publication, there will only be one remaining Financial Committee meeting this semester(club funding is listed at the bottom of the article).

Senator Andrew Happy, alongside Senator Lily Garvey, announced a meeting with Associate Dean of Students for Academic Life Steve Abrahão last Friday, where they talked about discrepancies in freshman experiences in HUM 110 and advising, and the new resolution introduced by the Committee for Academic Policy and Planning (CAPP), requiring all professors to give every student 4-week comments.

Senator Caroline Spiggle announced that she talked to Institutional Research and got statistics about disability at Reed, and planned to release that info next year on behalf of the Committee for Accessibility Resources and Disability Support (CARDS), further saying “It’s wonderful that we are partnering with DAR more formally.” The CARDS closet will be available for set hours during reading week for people to get sensory support(Spiggle noted that the times would be listed on the Student Events page). She also mentioned the availability of CARDS baskets, saying, “Faculty, or anyone who would like to request a basket, [should] reach out to CARDS, even if it’s just for your office hours.” Senator Spiggle also announced that Senate and Commons will collaborate to release free grilled cheese and yerba mate from the Franz Bread Food Truck on April 26 from 1:00-3:00pm in the library area, saying “We appreciate them, they appreciate us.” Spiggle also thanked Commons in regards to allergen labeling, saying, “They’ve been a great ally.”

Senator Bella Moore, along with several of her colleagues, gave their goodbyes to Cameron Tanner, Assistant Dean for Student Rights and Responsibilities, and indicated that as of now the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) committee lacks a solid point of contact within the administration.

Senator Philip Dussin reported from a meeting with Chief Information Officer Val Morano last Friday, where they made a list of priorities for things they want to see in the next 5 years, including improving WiFi access in Foster-Scholz, and “addressing swipe access.”
