I work in the cause of harmony, mixing the sounds of France, Germany, and Italy and attempting thus to prevent wars and to serve the cause of peace among nations and their striving for peace.” Georg Muffat’s words are as relevant today as when he wrote them in 1695. Here, musical styles range from his French-infused dances to Andrzej Panufnik’s unique recreation of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century musical fragments from Poland that were almost lost to the ravages of war. Our season culminates with an Italianate symphony by the Ukrainian composer Maxim Berezovsky. PROGRAM TO INCLUDE

Wax, Paper, Scissors: Loss and Recuperation in Colonial Latin America (4:30pm @ Psychology, 105)

Chance. Accident. Surprise. It is one thing to search out colonial creations and the histories they can reveal; it’s another when those creations surface in ways that were neither predicted nor predictable. This talk considers how unexpected survivals from colonial Latin America challenge current, interpretive work in art history, museums, and archives. Among the works considered: blocks of wax from colonial shipwrecks, Catholic prints, sculptures of Christ, and Indigenous codices. At issue are the interpretive ethical questions such creations raise and what it means to take loss—not only recuperation—seriously and how chance encounter allows us to come to appreciate that which is (usually) no longer. Dana Leibsohn, the Alice Pratt Brown Professor of Art at Smith College, researches and writes about colonialism and visual culture in the early modern Americas and Pacific world. Her work has considered Indigenous manuscript painting, the trade between China and Mexico, cartography in Manila, and the art history of shipwrecks. This talk draws on collaborative work she is doing with Aaron Hyman on the concept of “loss” in the early modern Spanish Americas and the ethics of chance discovery. Sponsored by the art department. Free and open to the public.

The event will end with a fire pit outside of Eliot Hall for folks to bring a message--a prayer, a curse, a wish, a letter–that they wish to let go of. By participating in Take Back the Night, we recognize that sexual violence affects all of us, and that it will take all of us to end it. Biology Seminar: Dr. Kristin Harper (12pm to 12:50pm @ Biology, Biology 19)

"Regulatory Strategies for Improving Access to Quality, Affordable Medicines Around the World" Access to safe, effective, and affordable medicines is critical for achieving universal health coverage, a major priority for the World Health Organization and many countries around the world. Currently, however, an estimated 2 billion people lack access to essential medicines. National and international regulatory authorities have an important role in improving access to lifesaving medicines. On the one hand, regulatory authorities are responsible for providing enough regulation that the medicines within a country or region are safe and effective. On the other hand, they cannot provide so much regulation that medicines become unaffordable or cannot reach the people who need them, especially during public health emergencies. Finding the right regulatory balance can be challenging, especially when resources are limited. This talk will explore some of the novel strategies that regulatory authorities around the world are using to improve access to quality, affordable medicines. Dr. Kristin Harper is a writer and editor that focuses on biomedical and public health. 11:50 am- Snacks & Socializing noon- Talk Begins

Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April where folks wear denim to demonstrate support for survivors and challenge myths supporting sexual violence. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court in 1999, where a rape conviction was overturned after the judges ruled that the jeans worn by the victim were too tight to not have been removed by the victim–thereby implying consent. The day following the ruling, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Come by our table outside the GCC to write your messages of support!
