Faculty Correction

In last week's Quest, one of our reporters covered the March 4 faculty meeting which, among other things, discussed conversations surrounding Staffed Against Sabbatical, a policy up for discussion with faculty members. There were a few errors/misquotes in this coverage, and we would like to correct those errors now:

First, while the Quest correctly reported that Meg Scharle said that 16% of current Reed faculty are visiting, the Quest then misreported that she also stated that Reed had 5% visiting professors.

Further, the Quest quoted Scharle saying, “We're inviting you to be part of this conversation. We don't want to eliminate static and sabbatical. It's not like we're looking to get rid of staff…” but the quote instead is, “We're inviting you to be part of this conversation. We don't want to eliminate staffed against sabbatical. It's not like we're looking to get rid of staff…”

Finally, the Quest misquoted Kathy Oleson, saying in the article, “Oleson then explained that the cons were the ones that had been spoken about at the meeting…but it would decrease faculty workload, and add an emphasis to having good faculty advising.” This quote was actually said by Meg Scharle.

Editors’ note: Photos, videos, and audio recordings are not permitted at faculty meetings, which results in more errors in coverage than normal, as reporters can not refer back to audio recordings post-faculty meetings.
