Biology Seminar: Dr. Jae Downing Corman (12pm to 12:50pm @ Biology, Biology 19)
"LGBT Health: History, Research and Practice" Over the past decade, Dr. Corman has committed themself to improving healthcare access for LGBTQ individuals, drawing from their own experiences as a gender non-binary, queer person. Starting as a grad student, they identified gaps in LGBTQ health research beyond HIV, leading them to explore this more with a PhD at UC Berkeley. As a faculty member at OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, they pioneered research on transgender and gender diverse folks and birth outcomes for LGBTQ people. Leaving academia to join FOLX in 2023, they now lead LGBTQ-affirming care research and analytics. This talk will cover the evolution of LGBTQ health research, their contributions, and career paths in academia and health tech. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) invites you to our Spring Info Session, an opportunity for Reed students, faculty, and staff to learn about the IRB review process. The IRB reviews all research involving human participants, from ethnographic interviews to psychological experiments. This also includes research for (or that may one day become part of) senior thesis projects. We’ll cover topics including the submission process, the categories of review, consent, data privacy laws for international research, our training modules, and considerations for online data collection. Memory Activism Series: Breaking Bread: Untold Stories of Reed (4pm to 5:30pm @ Student Union)
Looking to the past to make change in the present. We will gather to hear some of the untold stories of Reed, with two honored activist alumni guests: Kathleen Saadat ’74, a mentor and activist in Portland’s queer, feminist, and Black communities; and Phil Wikelund ‘68, activist and co-founder of the Students for a Democratic Society at Reed. In this event, we will be breaking bread and raising up untold stories. We will be engaging questions about the Reed we know, and the Reed we would like to see. What is the story you want to tell as you move in the world? What can you do to bring about the future that you want to see? Sponsored by the theater department and a Mellon Grant from the NW5C for Community Engagement. Open to Reed community members only.

Poetry Salon: A space to come together with peers, professors, and guest writers about poetry. Trevino L. Brings Plenty, MFA, is enrolled in the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Brings Plenty is a filmmaker, musician, and poet. His work has appeared in Yellow Medicine Review, Red Ink Magazine, World Literature Today, Plume, Prairie Schooner, North American Review, Waxwing, Poetry, and New Poets of Native Nations. SHARE Lounges are a friendly, safe, and relatively quiet alternative gathering space for your weekend social. We are substance-free, and offer tea, snacks, safer sex supplies, and entertainment like games, music, and crafts! It is staffed by the Night Owls and our Peer Advocates, two groups under the SHARE umbrella, together fostering a culture of consent, support for survivors, and reducing harm on campus. As a chemistry graduate, Emma shifted to a career first communicating science and subsequently teaching science communication. She offers insights into the careers you might consider if you are passionate about science, but more interested in talking about it than doing research. Keith Karoly's lab focuses on research investigating the ecology and evolution of flowering plants, with a primary emphasis on understanding their reproductive biology. Canyon Day (11am to 2pm @ Canyon)
Join us this spring for Canyon Day, Reed College's oldest tradition. Together, we'll work on a portion of the Reed Canyon, planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive plants, with the long-term goal of managing the headwaters of Crystal Springs Creek, a tributary of Johnson Creek. Join us anytime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. We'll be working near the Reed waterfall, which is close to the land bridge below the Griffin residence hall. Free and open to all ages. Tools, training, food, and fun provided. Dress for the weather, and bring gloves if you have them.
Reed Zine Fest with keynote speaker James Spooner (11am to 4pm @ Kaul Auditorium)
Reed Zine Fest is the first zine fest organized by the Reed College Library to celebrate independent publishing, DIY, and zine making. This one-day festival will feature both local community and Reedie zinesters, workshops, and a keynote by special guest James Spooner (The High Desert, Black Punk Now, and the Afro-Punk Documentary). Spooner will be sharing his experience as a Black punk navigating the scene and finding his voice. The keynote will be from 12pm-1pm in the Performing Arts Building (PAB 320). Masks are required for Reed Zine Fest. We will be offering KN95 masks at the welcome desk and are working on providing a limited number of tests to attendees. Join us for lunch on 3/30 from 1-2pm at the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) featuring James Spooner, the award-winning author of the coming-of-age graphic novel memoir, “The High Desert.” Don’t miss this unique opportunity to interact with a notable author and engage in meaningful dialogue about his work! The group will be walking over to the MRC after James Spooner's Keynote (which is from 12-1pm in PAB 320). Special thanks to Lily De La Fuente the Humanities Librarian for selecting The High Desert for the Fall 2023 MRC Book Club.
