Exhibition: Jesse Murry: Rising (12pm to 5pm @ Cooley Art Gallery)

Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, in partnership with Converge 45: Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship.Nestled in the Reed library, always free and open to the public.The Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College and Converge 45 are proud to present Jesse Murry: Rising—the first west coast showing of the poetic landscapes of American painter, poet, and art critic Jesse Murry (1948–1993).

The exhibition is curated by renowned American painter Lisa Yuskavage, and 2022 Kennedy Scholar Jarrett Earnest, and is part of Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship—Converge curator Christian Viveros-Faune’s city-wide initiative. The exhibition is organized for the Cooley by curator Stephanie Snyder and Converge artistic director Derek Franklin.

Jesse Murry: Rising presents a group of the artist’s oil paintings created between 1988 and 1993, the last five years of Murry’s life, when he was confronted with the reality of his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness. The works testify to Murry’s lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning—at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind.

SHARE Lounge (10pm to 1am @ Winch, Winch Commons)

SHARE Lounges are a friendly, safe, and relatively quiet alternative gathering space for your weekend social. We are substance-free, and offer tea, snacks, safer sex supplies, and entertainment like games, music, and crafts! It is staffed by the Night Owls and our Peer Advocates, two groups under the SHARE umbrella, together fostering a culture of consent, support for survivors, and reducing harm on campus. This a chill space for people to 1) hang out if they don’t want to be around substances, 2) take a breather and collect themselves an event on campus becomes uncomfortable, and 3) seek out SHARE resources after an experience of interpersonal violence, or other mental and physical heath support needs.

Physics Major Alumni Group - Virtual Talk with Muldrow Etheredge ’17 (5pm to 6pm @ Virtual Event)

Join the physics major alumni group (students and non-physics majors are welcome, too!) for a virtual talk on Monday, December 4 at 5pm PT/8pm ET. We will hear from Muldrow Etheredge ’17 about his string theory research.

Muldrow Etheredge ’17 received his BA in Mathematics/Physics from Reed, and is currently a PhD student at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. This winter he will start as a KITP Graduate Research Fellow in Santa Barbara. His research deals with string theory—he investigates what string theory fundamentally is, its phenomenological consequences, and its deep connections with Quantum Field Theory.

We’ll also have some time at the end of the event to introduce ourselves, socialize, and talk about our paths from Reed to the present. We look forward to seeing you there!

A New Era of Blood Donation Blood Drive by Bloodworks Northwest (hosted by SEEDS) (9am to 3pm @ Old Dorm Block)

On December 6, 2023 Bloodworks Northwest, the local blood bank of the Pacific Northwest and the primary blood supplier for all Legacy, Providence, and PeaceHealth hospitals in our region, is implementing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s new individual donor assessment guidance for all blood donors which eases the restrictions on donations for gay and bisexual men.

All prospective donors will be asked the same risk-based questionnaire regardless, including those about sexual behaviors and history of pregnancy, when signing up to give blood.This change means that during donor screening, the questionnaire will no longer ask “male-specific” or “female-specific” questions. Newly eligible donors under the new guidance can begin booking appointments now for December 6, 2023 and beyond.

What is the new criteria?

The criteria will now focus on sexual contact proven to have a higher risk of disease transmission rather than gender or orientation. All potential donors will be asked whether, in the three months prior to their date of donation, they have:

Student Flu Clinics (11am to 1:30pm @ Gray Campus Center, A)

Stay safe this flu season and get your annual booster at student flu clinics offered by the HCC. Medical staff will be administering vaccines Thursdays from now until March 2024 in GCC-A from 11am-1:30pm. No appointment necessary, walk-ins encouraged. Please bring an insurance card.

Treat Yourself (12pm to 2pm @ Student Union)

Join the Gray Fund team for an afternoon of relaxing crafts, activities, and a sound bath workshop! The sound bath workshop will be held from 1:30-2pm. Free food, drinks and swag will be provided.

MRC x CRES Study Break (2pm to 4pm @ Old Dorm Block, Winch social room)

Come join the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) and Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) for a study break during reading week! Study break snacks will be provided!

Foster-Scholz Club Presents: Environmental Humanities Lecture (6pm to 8pm @ Eliot Hall, Chapel)

The Foster-Scholz Club of alumni will be hosting a panel, open to all alumni and members of the Reed community, on the pilot of a new model of collaborative teaching and learning within the Environmental Humanities at Reed College. This endeavor is supported by a 3-year Mellon Foundation grant. Join Professor Sarah Wagner-McCoy, captain of this program, and a panel of her co-collaborators as they discuss how this project has come to be and what it has done for Reed in the last semester, as well as where it might go in the future.

This project has included public events with leading speakers in environmental humanities, new courses and programs open to students, and an Environmental Humanities Thesis Collective–everything from lectures on theatre and Standing Rock, to sea-kayaking with an English class, to cross-generational conversations about what the environment means to each of us.
