Biology Seminar: Dr. Anna Ritz (12pm to 1pm @ Biology, Biology 19)
“Predicting disease-associated genes with biological networks”
Molecular interaction networks are important tools to model how proteins work together to carry out essential functions within the cell. A major area of computational systems biology research aims to identify network modules - groups of proteins that are highly connected within an interaction network - to identify proteins that collectively participate in pathways and specific processes. Some of these modules are associated with specific complex diseases, suggesting the pathways and processes that must be dysregulated within those diseases. While over one hundred tools to predict network modules exist, it is still challenging to find disease modules for certain diseases. This talk will describe our recent contribution to disease module prediction by looking for network modules that have fundamentally different properties than nearly all prior methods. This project was a collaboration with former Reed postdoc Pramesh Singh and Hannah Kuder ’23.
Anna Ritz’s research explores different ways to computationally model biological systems, concentrating on how diseases such as cancer affect these systems.

Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College and Converge 45 are proud to present Jesse Murry: Rising—the first west coast showing of the poetic landscapes of American painter, poet, and art critic Jesse Murry (1948–1993).
The exhibition is curated by renowned American painter Lisa Yuskavage, and 2022 Kennedy Scholar Jarrett Earnest, and is part of Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship—Converge curator Christian Viveros-Faune’s city-wide initiative. The exhibition is organized for the Cooley by curator Stephanie Snyder and Converge artistic director Derek Franklin.
Jesse Murry: Rising presents a group of the artist’s oil paintings created between 1988 and 1993, the last five years of Murry’s life, when he was confronted with the reality of his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness. The works testify to Murry’s lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning—at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind.
At the heart of Rising, dwells the intimate and devoted friendship between Jesse Murry and Lisa Yuskavage. The two painters met at the beginning of their tenure at the Yale School of Art, where they received their MFAs in 1986. The goal of the event is to share strategies and insight with sophomores on how to begin to develop relationships with their faculty for whom they may want to research with in the future. Join CLBR and 3 student-leaders who will be available to discuss their experiences working on research with faculty, and what that research assistants’ role looks like day-to-day. CLBR will be available during the event to discuss internships and use these similar shared strategies in finding employers to host them as internships through our Summer Internship Award funding.

Oregon Origins Project III: Maa~‑xuslh‑ghalh‑ta Tututni Dené (A Year in Tututni Dené Seasons) (12pm to 5pm @ Vollum College Center, Vollum lounge)
Oregon Origins Project presents a journey through the seasonal traditions of the southwest Oregon coast indigenous peoples. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Antonio is currently assistant director of Tri-C Creative Arts Dance Academy, movement director for The Public Theater’s Shakespeare Initiative, artist in residence choreographer for Ground Works Dance Theater, associate choreographer for the off-Broadway musical Black No More, and has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artist Esperanza Spalding.

Physics Seminar: “Therapeutic Medical Physics” Amanda Swanson, M.S. (4:30pm to 5:30pm @ Physics, P123)
Many medical procedures directly apply concepts from the physics classroom to the clinic, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, optical coherence, radioactivity, and high-energy physics. Medical physicists ensure that treatments using physics-based techniques are performed as effectively and safely as possible by linking technological advances with clinical assessment and quality management. As a therapeutic medical physicist, I specialize in the use of high-energy x-rays and particles to treat disease. This is commonly performed using a linear accelerator (external beam photon radiotherapy/particle therapy), or radioactive sources (brachytherapy). My current clinical foci are high-precision cranial radiotherapy and total body irradiation.
This seminar will provide an introduction to the field of Medical Physics, with a focus on therapeutic applications and a physicist’s responsibilities in a radiation medicine clinic. I will offer my perspective on what makes working in this field unique and rewarding, discuss possible career pathways, and highlight current avenues of research.

CRES Colloquium: Hear Our Voices Book Launch with Radhika Natarajan and Alexander Mostov (4:30pm to 6pm @ Eliot Hall, Chapel)
Join us as we celebrate the release of a new history of the British Empire for young readers, written by Reed’s own Radhika Natarajan (History, Humanities, and CRES), who will be joined by illustrator Alexander Mostov!
Radhika and Alexander will discuss the challenges and opportunities of writing and illustrating histories that show why we live in the world we do and why learning about the past helps us create better futures.
Hear Our Voices is a compelling and important history of the British Empire, told from the perspective of 20 people who lived through it. This book shines a light on the human aspects of the ‘Empire where the sun never set’, introducing readers to a host of figures, both powerful and modest, who lived through, challenged, and influenced the course of the British Empire.
But how did this empire come to be? And what happened to the people who lived under colonialism? The people whose lives were touched? This book tells their stories and reclaims this chapter in history by giving voice to 20 real figures whose perspectives have often been ignored, overlooked or sidelined.
