“Boiga: Venom and Invasion”
Brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis) are a notorious invasive species responsible for several extinctions and extirpations after their introduction to the island of Guam. This talk will delve into the specialized toxins of these snakes to address whether this invasion was a product of chance or a historical inevitably.
Daniel Dashevsky’s research focuses on the evolution of snake and wasp venom.

The exhibition is curated by renowned American painter Lisa Yuskavage, and 2022 Kennedy Scholar Jarrett Earnest, and is part of Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship—Converge curator Christian Viveros-Faune’s city-wide initiative. The exhibition is organized for the Cooley by curator Stephanie Snyder and Converge artistic director Derek Franklin.
Jesse Murry: Rising presents a group of the artist’s oil paintings created between 1988 and 1993, the last five years of Murry’s life, when he was confronted with the reality of his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness. The works testify to Murry’s lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning—at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind.
At the heart of Rising, dwells the intimate and devoted friendship between Jesse Murry and Lisa Yuskavage. The two painters met at the beginning of their tenure at the Yale School of Art, where they received their MFAs in 1986. Computer Science Colloquium: Phil Gibbons, Carnegie Mellon University (4:40pm @ Eliot 314)
Making Processors Robotics Friendly - The advancement of robotics technology is rapidly changing the world we live in. Most of this growth is in autonomous robots (pilotless drones, driverless vehicles, home assistants) that require performing complex AI tasks in real-time. While the computing industry has made recent strides developing (often proprietary) hardware accelerators for robotic tasks, what’s needed are open-source efforts that engage the broader computer systems/architecture community.
In this talk, I will describe our research on two fronts. First, we have created RoWild, the first comprehensive, open-source, high-performance, cross-platform robotic benchmark suite. Our choice of implemented tasks and algorithms stems from a comprehensive analysis of 29 industrial robots, encompassing a diverse range from arm manipulators and home-cleaning robots to self-driving vehicles, as well as state-of-the-art research algorithms. Second, our study using RoWild has revealed the performance bottlenecks in both individual tasks and end-to-end robot software pipelines, highlighting the need for architectural advancements that satisfy the primary requirements of robotic tasks. I will present some preliminary results addressing these bottlenecks, primarily from our extensive study of path planning, a key robotic task basically ignored in all the machine learning hype.

Brittney Corrigan (Reed, 1994) is the author of the poetry collections Daughters, Breaking, Navigation, 40 Weeks, and most recently, Solastalgia, a collection of poems about climate change, extinction, and the Anthropocene Age (JackLeg Press, 2023). Brittney was raised in Colorado and has lived in Portland, Oregon for the past three decades, where she is an alumna and employee of Reed College. She is currently at work on her first short story collection.
sidony o’neal (Reed, 2026) is an artist and writer based in Portland, OR. o’neal’s work has been presented at the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon; City SALTS, Basel, Switzerland; Dracula’s Revenge, New York, Veronica Project Space, Seattle, Washington; SculptureCenter, New York, and ILY2, Portland, Oregon, among other venues. The JET Program is a competitive employment opportunity that allows young professionals to live and work in cities, towns, and villages throughout Japan. Being a JET is a chance to teach and to represent the United States as a cultural ambassador to Japan. Making Counter-plantation in Twenty-first Century Caribbean Philosophy and Visual Art (4:30pm to 6pm @ Library, 41)
A workshop of scholarship in process open to faculty, staff, and students.
The counter-plantation, as Jean Casimir describes about Haitian revolutionaries, is a form of self-reliance that expands day-to-day living against state-enforced slavery. In considering contemporary post-disaster experiences in Puerto Rico and Haiti, we can see similar counter-plantation dynamics unfold where local community action creates modes of survivance against a state apparatus of abusive neglect. In this workshop we will consider two twenty-first century visual artists—Miami-based Haitian artist Édouard Duval-Carrié and Puerto Rican Rosaura Rodríguez—whose work makes visible how Caribbean peoples in continuing colonial situations also continue to engage counter-plantation traditions. While counter-plantation practices are wide-ranging and constantly evolving, they have in common an interdependence with local plant and earth matter, community resources, and peer-group education as the basis for the autonomous organization of reciprocal solidarity. To open up a discussion about the philosophical bases that sustain Caribbean traditions of counter-plantation, this workshop offers as a starting point Duval-Carrié’s “Soucouyant” series, where the folk figure of the soucouyant is composed of a collage of images of bacteria and plant matter, and Rodríguez’s practice of making her own pigments from the plant and earth matter found around Campo Tabonuco, the mountain farm and education center in th […]
Physics Seminar: “What is Quantum Cosmology” David Craig PhD (4:30pm to 5:30pm @ NA)
“Quantum cosmology” might sound like an oxymoron, pairing as it does quantum mechanics, our physical understanding of the very smallest things in nature, with cosmology, our attempt to model the universe at the largest scales. This colloquium will explain why this is actually a reasonable thing to try, how physicists go about it, and some key results from one approach known as loop quantum cosmology. Along the way we’ll discuss some questions about the foundations of physics that naturally arise in this setting.
