Biology Seminar: Dr. Kathleen Darragh (12pm to 1pm @ Biology, Biology 19)
The Evolution of Chemical Diversity: a Tale of Insect Pheromones and Floral Scent
Both plants and insects produce a vast diversity of chemical compounds. These compounds are used for a variety of different functions including attracting mates, attracting pollinators, and defense against predators and herbivores. I will discuss, using examples from butterflies and spiral ginger plants, how I have combined chemical ecology, genetics, and behavioral studies to better understand the importance of chemical signaling and its evolution in these systems. In particular, I will focus on the role of male pheromones in butterfly mating decisions, and how the evolution of floral scent is driven by pollinators.
Kathy Darragh’s research explores a variety of questions at the intersection between chemical ecology and evolutionary biology. We investigate how biosynthetic pathways and enzymes evolve to produce the chemical diversity that we see in nature, the genetic basis of chemical traits, and the evolutionary importance of chemical signaling in plants and insects.

Exhibition: Jesse Murry: Rising (12pm to 5pm @ Cooley Art Gallery)
Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, in partnership with Converge 45: Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship.Nestled in the Reed library, always free and open to the public. The Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College and Converge 45 are proud to present Jesse Murry: Rising — the first west coast showing of the poetic landscapes of American painter, poet, and art critic Jesse Murry (1948–1993).
The exhibition is curated by renowned American painter Lisa Yuskavage, and 2022 Kennedy Scholar Jarrett Earnest, and is part of Social Forms: Art as Global Citizenship — Converge curator Christian Viveros-Faune’s city-wide initiative. The exhibition is organized for the Cooley by curator Stephanie Snyder and Converge artistic director Derek Franklin.
Jesse Murry: Rising presents a group of the artist’s oil paintings created between 1988 and 1993, the last five years of Murry’s life, when he was confronted with the reality of his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness. The works testify to Murry’s lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning — at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind.

When you arrive, choose a beverage and get some eats from Alesong’s full menu - we’ll have tables reserved for our group. Once we’ve settled in, we can take a quick tour of their cellar and then let the rest of the afternoon unfold. There are some lawn games there and we have a couple of Reed-themed prizes - shall we have a friendly competition? All in all, we’re still interested in getting to know one another and discussing what future meet-ups look like! We hope you can join us or suggest an idea for a future meet-up.
