The heart of Reed life is the classroom:  the studio, the seminar room, the lab, and the lecture hall. In this session, Mary Ashburn Miller, professor of history and humanities and director of Reed’s Center for Teaching and Learning, will lead a discussion about the Reed classroom. You will learn how our faculty structure their classes to foster an education of the richest sort and what it means at Reed to be a faculty scholar dedicated, first, to teaching.

Commons 101

Want to know more about dining at Reed? Commons 101 gives students the opportunity to come into Commons for a tour, learn how it all works, and ask questions. Bon Appetit leadership staff will be on hand to answer questions like: what we have to offer for vegans, how to check the balance of your board plan, how to order online, how to navigate Commons with food allergies, etc. The tours will start every 15 minutes. All who attend will receive a drink voucher for Canyon Cafe or the Market Place courtesy of Bon Appétit!

Nature-Based Mindfulness Practice (Reed Canyon)

Come make connections with others and meet the Reed Canyon! We will mindfully walk through the canyon and transition from “thinking” to “sensing” and from “doing” to “being,” which will help facilitate nonjudgmental present-moment focus, connection, self-reflection, and centering. We hope this will help you feel a sense of community with nature and others who are engaging in the mindfulness practice. Please register here.

Space is limited and the sign-up form will close when capacity has been reached. We will offer similar practices throughout the semester. This is a new resource for Reed students that helps divert usable items from the landfill and saves you money. We’ll have a sample of items in the Quad and will be doing tours of the Shop every 15 minutes or so.

How To Apply For Reed Funding For Research and Other Opportunities

Want to get paid to spend your summer engaged in research? Want to work with a faculty member on a collaborative project? Would flying to another state or country to an archive, exhibition, lab, or performance help you expand your thinking and practice? Reed has funding for such projects and opportunities and we want to share with you how to formulate proposals and apply for Reed research opportunities during the academic year and summer. This session will discuss the various grant and summer research opportunities administered by the Undergraduate Research Committee (URC). Members of the URC will be on hand to answer questions. It’s never too early to start making plans for next summer and beyond.

Title IX - An Introduction to Supports, Options, and Resources (REQUIRED)

The college takes a multifaceted approach to addressing sexual misconduct. This session will provide a brief overview of the college’s obligations under Title IX and Oregon law. The primary focus of the session will be on the varied supports, resources, and options that are available to students within the college’s reporting and response procedures. This is a required session.

Orientation Lunch for Students of Color

Please join the Office for Institutional Diversity for a free lunch for all students of color as we celebrate the start of the 2023-24 academic year! All students of color are invited to join us for a get-to-know-you lunch with current students, staff, and faculty of color. The Practice of Calligraphy at Reed

The Multicultural Resource Center is located in the Student Center Building. Join Sonia Sabnis, Professor of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Humanities, for a special tour of the Portland Japanese Garden. This is a unique opportunity to engage with a faculty member outside of the classroom and to explore one of Portland’s beautiful destinations. The Portland Japanese Garden encompasses 12 acres with eight separate garden styles, and includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt.
